Halo: Reach “Birth of a Spartan” Live Action Short Coming April 27

Microsoft and Bungie are set to debut another live action short, this time to promote Halo: Reach. Set to debut on multiple U.S. and European television networks, and before Iron Man 2 (which opens May 7th), the short is called “Birth of a Spartan” and will give an inside look at the Spartan III program and how Carter 259, a central character in Halo: Reach became a spartan. This process has only been described in the Halo novels, so it will be very interesting to see the live action video.

“The highly classified bio-augmentation procedure is a Spartan candidate’s final and most difficult ordeal before joining the ranks of the legendary soldiers. The dramatic interpretation of Carter’s rebirth as a Spartan embodies the themes of courage, sacrifice and honor in “Halo: Reach” and gives viewers a unique look into the origins of a central character in the upcoming blockbuster game.”

Halo: Reach Special Editions Detailed

Major Nelson has just dropped the details on the three editions of Halo: Reach coming this fall. When Halo 3 arrived in 2007 the editions came with some disappointing packaging, but it looks as if Bungie will rectify the situation this year. When the Legendary edition launched in ‘07 it was supposed to be a limited quantity, needless to say I think you can still find a so called “cat helmet” around your local game store for around $70. The Reach Legendary Edition looks as if it will be actually limited, coming with a custom molded and hand painted Noble team statue. The three editions include the normal version of the game, no frills here, a Limited Edition, and a Legendary Edition. See below for the details!

In addition to the game disc and manual, the Limited edition includes:

* Game disc housed in recovered ONI ”black box”

Gears of War 3 Debuted, Coming April 5th 2011 in US

Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski had his late night debut on Jimmy Fallon last night to debut the studio’s next major project, Gears of War 3. While it may have been one of the worst kept secrets in the gaming industry after an Xbox 360 Dashboard ad gave the game away last Thursday, the Gears 3 trailer shows that Epic can still produce good trailers. As for the game, you don’t get too much of a glimpse here but you will notice a female soldier as well as a few new weapons. The game is set to launch in the U.S. on April 5th, 2011 and in Europe April 8th, 2011. Enjoy!

Former Infinity Ward Heads Form Respawn Entertainment

Finally a bit of closure in the Activision versus former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella case. The duo have opened a new studio named “Respawn Entertainment” under Electronic Arts’ EA Partners Program. The move comes right off the heals of West and Zampella being fired from Infinity Ward, a studio they created, for insubordination. As a fitting jab EA offered this line in their press release:

“The move positions the Respawn Entertainment leadership team as the owners of the intellectual property they create.”

Respawn Entertainment is currently hiring to fill the studio’s roster with “a world-class team of designers, artists and engineers,” any interested can apply at jobs@respawn.com.

The move is certainly a jab at Activision, but was something many had predicted. We will soon find out if West and Zampella can recreate the magic they had at Infinity Ward and create a new franchise to claim their spot in the industry once again.
