GRIN Studios Closes, Outbreak Opens

GRIN Studios, the folks behind games like Wanted: Weapons of Fate and Bionic Commando has officially closed its doors today. Kotaku has the following information on the closure:

“In a letter from GRIN founders Bo and Ulf Andersson, the CEO and director, respectively, write that “too many publishers have been delaying their payments” to the developer, ending the 12-year-old company officially. The Anderssons lament their “unreleased masterpiece that we weren’t allowed to finish,” going on to thank their partners and the publishers who apparently did pay them.

Rumors of GRIN’s demise began popping up earlier this week, with studios Barcelona and Gothenburg shutting down and the imminent closure of the company’s Stockholm HQ. That followed reports of cutbacks earlier in the year, not long after the developer’s Bionic Commando and Terminator games failed to inspire sales.”

Out of the ashes of GRIN has arisen Outbreak Studios, created by the lead programmer from GRIN, the studio plans to focus on download only games.

A GPU Short: Marketing in the Video Game Industry

Ahh marketing. This topic strikes a chord with me personally because this past December I graduated with a degree in marketing. Once you begin to study the subject you cannot even walk through a grocery store without thinking why companies do what they do in terms of marketing and advertising.

In the video game industry marketing is a two-headed demon. There are a select few games each year that have a ton of hype and a huge marketing push even though they may not need, or deserve it. There are also a few games who fly under the radar and could use a simple commercial or preview to show how good of game it actually is. Marketers (whether you want to believe it or not) have a very tough job; You don’t market a game enough and it won’t sell, you market it too much and it may sell, but may not live up to the hype you have created. For this reason I put the challenge more on myself (as well as other gamers) to decipher which marketing you listen to or which you don’t.

If there is a game you are really excited for and know a lot about, don’t pay much attention to the marketing, go buy it based on what you know. In the reverse scenario, if there is a game that looks cool but you know nothing about, jump into some of that marketing and advertising to find out what it is all about.

Overall I think it is up to the gamer themselves to pick through marketing and decide which to listen to. This applies to gaming as well as life in general. Just remember, marketing’s ultimate goal is to make consumers aware of a product, not to sell it, so in the end it is really up to you what you do and do not decide to buy.

Kojima Teases Next Game With Nature/Number 5

Kojima productions has been fairly quiet since the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 (and the iPhone counterpart) so it isn’t surprising, with E3 right around the corner, to see a teaser site pop up. http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/next/ shows an empty field with a countdown that ends this Thursday at 8pm (CST). Also if you watch closely enough a number 5 (or possibly block-based letter S) pops up on the screen. Could this mean MGS 5 or something completely different? We should find out more when the countdown ends Thursday night.

3D Realms Says Goodbye

It is always hard to see a game developer shut their doors, but even harder when it is one that has been known very well throughout the last decade, and one currently working on a new project. 3D Realms has unfortunately decided to close its doors after 22 years of development, which also means the limbo-placement on Duke Nukem Forever. In a statement on the official site the developer said:

“Thanks for being fans and for all your support.”

3D Realms brought us the trash-talking, no BS Duke Nukem and published games like Rockstar and Remedy’s Max Payne. These hard times are tough on everybody, we wish the best of luck to the team, hopefully their talents in the industry can be utilized elsewhere. Who knows, maybe Duke Nukem will show his face again someday.

The folks at Gamervision have managed to capture some footage of the remake of TMNT: Turtles in Time in action.

This was one of my favorite games growing up so I’m personally really excited. The 3d graphics look great but part of me hopes they include an option to play the original sprite version of the game.

Of course, what would travel be without a trusty companion? The “Fable II” dog returns with three alter egos to guide players on their quests to see the future, in the form of a Dalmatian, Bloodhound or Husky.”

To celebrate the DLC there eill be a free Live weekend for Fable 2 players starting on May 8th and running until May 11th.

Will Wright Leaves EA & Maxis After 20 Years

In breaking news EA has just announced that the visionary behind Sim City, The Sims, and Spore, Will Wright will be leaving the company. A press release sent out by EA states that Will will run his venture “Stupid Fun Club,” an organization that Will founded in 2001 which is a “think tank developing new Intellectual Properties to be deployed across multiple fronts including video games, movies, television, the internet, and toys.”

“The entertainment industry is moving rapidly into an era of revolutionary change,” said Will Wright. “Stupid Fun Club will explore new possibilities that are emerging from this sublime chaos and create new forms of entertainment on a variety of platforms. In my twelve years at EA, I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside some of the brightest and most talented game developers in the industry and I look forward to working with them again in the near future.”

EA sees this move as a rearrangement of the relationship and not a radical change mainly because EA also has stake in Will’s “Stupid Fun Club.” EA stresses that they have plenty of visionary people under the corporate umbrella, and that they will get the first dibs at any game-related content produced by Will’s other ventures.

“Will has been an inspiration to our teams, and it’s been rewarding for us to bring his ideas to life,” said Lucy Bradshaw, VP and General Manager at Maxis. “In addition to legendary games, Will’s legacy at EA will be the many talented people who worked with him and will now continue to contribute their own vision to the art of game development.”

We at GPU wish Will the best of luck with his new projects, and hope to see him in the video game space again soon.
