PS3 Slim Confirmed, Also Confirmed as Worst Kept Secret

As K-Mart and Sears leaked this morning, the PS3 slim is indeed a reality. Just announced at Gamescon in Germany, the new slim version boasts a 120GB HD and is 33% smaller and 36% lighter. The slim is set to debut the first week of September at a retail cost of $299. The only downside to this new slim version is still no backwards compatibility support for your PS2 games. Look for more news on the PS3 Slim coming soon.

Also announced is the 3.0 firmware update that adds some fun new features. What’s new (via Joystiq) after the jump.

Microsoft Announces First Fall Dash Update

Microsoft has announced that the first parts of the new dashboard update will be releasing August 11th. This first wave includes features such as Netflix party viewing, game ratings for the marketplace, the games on demand service for downloading full retail games, the avatar marketplace and awardables, and a few other tidbits for performance.

A select few will get the update a bit early via a preview program with details listed on Major Nelson’s site. Good luck to all attempting to get in, if you don’t August 11th is not too far off.

Features like LastFM, Twitter, and Facebook will be coming later this Fall.

Xbox 360 HDMI Audio Fix Coming Tomorrow

Since the launch of the New Xbox Experience last November some Xbox 360 users have been having trouble with audio for their systems, trouble meaning audio won’t work with HDMI connections. Microsoft had been working on the bug and now has announced that a dashboard update will fix the issue coming early tomorrow morning.

From Major Nelson:

“Starting Tuesday morning at 0200 Pacific when you sign into Xbox Live you’ll be prompted for a mandatory dashboard update. The update addresses the issue that a few folks were having with audio and their HDMI connection.

This update will be rolled out to all Xbox LIVE members around the world over the space of a few hours, so you may not get prompted for the update immediately. Thanks for your patience.”

Good to see the issue is finally getting taken care of.
